The stunning Sunderland Empire Theatre is a large theatre located in Sunderland. It opened in 1907 and is one of the largest venues in the North East. The auditorium has four tiers and even has private boxes.
In the early days the theatre enjoyed much success from its variety performances and then later became more of a cinema. Sunderland City Council bought it in 1960 and it became more synonymous with concerts. Nowadays, the theatre regularly plays host to large-scale musicals, opera, ballet, dance showcases, amateur productions and stand up comedy evenings.
